Scrappy Portland duo Panther are full of soul, but perhaps not the type you'd expect. Theirs is a mangled, grubby soul that stings instead of soothes, one that carouses with a nasty, lo-fi funk born from fried synths and blown out drum beat. "How Well Can You Swim?" displays that side as vocalist Charlie Salas-Humana hurls his histrionic vocals after breaking a bottle. Their softer side still has its rough edges, as evinced in Panther's latest single "Like A Bridge On Fire." Switching back and forth from bouncy vocals and piano chords to more plaintive yelps and ham-fisted playing, Panther's soul has multiple playful personalities jockeying for stage time.
