Dave Heumann is the driving force behind Baltimore doom-folk wizards Arboretum, who'll be releasing Song of the Pearl on Thrill Jockey next month, but he still finds the time to record epic minor-key dirges like "Two Soldiers" on his off days. The song eschews lyrical obliqueness and opts instead to tell you a story in the most direct, classical sense, casting Heumann as the wandering troubadour relating the details of the battle for his listeners. The prettiness of the instrumentation gives his strangled croak even more weight and mournfulness, even as the story draws to its inevitable, bloody conclusion.
