Lykke Li + Wildbirds & Peacedrums @ Webster Hall (2.2.09)

WILDDRUMS & PEACEBIRDS

If you were a lucky New Yorker, you caught Lykke Li in one of her sold-out shows at Webster Hall or Music Hall of Williamsburg this Tuesday or Wednesday. A surprising treat was the opening act, the Swedish duo, Wildbirds & Peacedrums. While their name is just plain confusing, their tracks are rambunctious and spontaneous in an appealing manner. Drummer Andreas Werliin had an impulsive, powerful style, while Mariam Wallentin flooded the room with seductive jazzy vocals with bluesy style and at times shrill, almost punk ambition. Unsurprisingly, the husband-wife team have great chemistry- building each song to a pulsing, fierce climax at times with vox, synth, and dueling drums.

LYKKE LI

Later that night, Lykke Li was a firecracker - jumping around stage, tooting her whistle, bellowing in a megaphone, hitting whatever drums or tambourines she could lay her hands on, and generally seducing the crowd with her infectious energy and nymph-like good looks. (How seduced where we? When I asked the fellah next to me how old she was, he simply replied "Definitely within dating range." For reference, she's only 23.)

While sipping whiskey straight, Lykke Li pummeled through a cover of Kings of Leon's "Knocked Up" and a lullaby cover of the classic "Tears On My Pillow" (or at least half of it until either she forgot the words or got shy to continue because none of the audience would sing along.) The last song, her cover of "Can I Kick It" by A Tribe Called Quest, gets better every time I hear it; she had the whole crowd frisky and roaring long after she exited the stage.
