Two-thirds of San Francisco's Mi Ami spent time bruising drumheads in Dischord act Black Eyes--guitarist and vocalist Daniel Martin-McCormick and bassist Jacob Long. After a move out to the Bay, they started Mi Ami with drummer Damon Palermo, taking dub's out-thereism, disco's four/four rhythms, and punk's abrasive guitars and mincing them into extended, five-minute-plus freakouts that point to Band Of Gypsys, Dinosaur L, and Sonic Youth. "New Guitar" is pulled from their debut album Watersports, out February 17 through Touch-And-Go sister label Quarterstick and recorded almost entirely live over a two-and-a-half day session in San Francisco. With surging tempos and a wound, circular bass figure, it's a telling preview of the indulgences on the record, which has been burning a proverbial hole in our iTunes and will likely remain one of our faves of '09.
