You might not know the name Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, but their sound probably rings a few bells. Although the forgotten funksters were in their prime between 1974-75 while living in France, the band achieved its widest renown as fodder for hip-hop producers. Their horns, guitars and keyboards (even from when they were called Ice) dot the records of Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, Nas, De La Soul, and many more. The sax riff on "Darkest Night," streaming below, has been the hook of several singles by itself. And now that Strut has reissued the band's most vital cuts on CD (to be released February 17th), Lafayette Afro-Rock Band may have another chance to be known by their name, not as samples.

Sounds like: Your favorite hip-hop producer's record collection
