"Near the Edge of Something Beautiful" describes the difficult equation of turning melancholy into beauty. Such is the sentiment of the Parisian foursome, Exsonvaldes, as well as the name of their new CD. A veritable French-accented Death Cab For Cutie, their vocals also match some of the more bereft (French-accented) laments of French Kicks' Nick Stumpf. "A Day Like Today" is lazy, drizzling pop song, the type birthed by a love-sick guy still in bed, surrounded by pizza boxes and cigarette butts, mourning the loss of his college sweetheart. The evolving guitar hook lead by loose-finger plucking and gentle drums keep the song afloat. Meanwhile, "Last Year" is more steady pop rock, led by a powerful piano refrain and a tight drum loop.

Sounds like: French Kicks, Paper Route, Death Cab For Cutie, Minus The Bear, Iron & Wine
