EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Birdmonster - I Might Have Guessed (Mean Version)

Since they self-released their debut album No Midnight in 2006, Birdmonster have spent a lot of time on the road, opening dates for and sharing stages with Tapes 'N Tapes, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The National and a lot more. In all the miles driven and towns played something must have clicked, because the young San Franciscan quartet traded in the jittery spaz-rock of No Midnight for a refined, American pop sound that fits as them comfortably as a soft old flannel. Writing songs in a "desert cabin" and recording their new tracks with producer Tom Schick (Ryan Adams, Rufus Wainwright, Norah Jones, etc.) they put together From The Mountain To The Sea, their first album for The FADER Label, which hit shelves in September. In its original form, "I Might Have Guessed" closes out the record in Appalachian fashion, a tune with lots of multi-tracked mandolins and acoustics that sounds like it was written by Jay Farrar of Son Volt when he was still young enough to be idealistic. Today we're offering up an exclusive "Mean Version" of the same song, which is essentially the "electric version," amplified guitars all over and four-on-the-floor drums as its heartbeat. The mandolin's still there, though, so you get the best of both worlds.
Sounds like: Son Volt, Whiskeytown, The Broken West
