While she hoists the freak folk flag every now and then, Alela Diane's music doesn't get lost in obtuse guitar puddles, preferring instead to dance around in the pastoral sonic nostalgia she inherited from her musician parents. The Nevada City, CA native's 2006 debut album The Pirate's Gospel garnered her some critical nods and mild fame in Europe, though now she's taking the leap up to a deal with Rough Trade, who will drop her next long-player, To Be Still, in February. "White As Diamonds" is the first track to surface, a traditional, Irish-inflected ballad that's dressed in Diane's tarty soprano and ribbons of worn violin and cello. It's stuff born from expansive lands and scattered civilization that lonesome-hearted urbanites can still mess with. We're game.

Sounds like: Jessica Lea Mayfield, Joanna Newsom, Cat Power
