While he grew up about ninety miles away, Josh Dahlberg's music was raised in Detroit. The fragments that form the basic skeleton of "Night Fire," his new single for the label he runs, Blank Arists, are of a classic techno pedigree: floating layers of robotic sub-rhythms beneath a simple keyboard melody that could be Kraftwerk or could be Devo. It's Detroit because it plays it cool, no heavy jack or big room release, just a simple, entrancing onion of rhythm and melody that unfolds over the course of six and a half minutes until its trails are suddenly wiggling out of your speaker cones.
