Walt Whitman’s poem "Oh Captain, My Captain,” which laments the premature death of Abe Lincoln, tends to conjure dark thoughts. True to its namesake, the Portland-based band “Oh Captain, My Captain" crafts shadowy, dramatic pop; for lack of a better term, we’ll call it 'emo-pop,' precluding any negative connotations of ‘emo’ or ‘pop.’ Shrouded in layers of chimes, harnessed by ominous drum and power chord progressions, the song "Big Vans And Aeroplanes" has a seasick feel (despite being about feeling land-locked and miserable) as singer Jesse Bettis sways dizzily between introspection and agitation.
