CMJ: DOWNLOAD: The Muslims - Nightlife + Beside Myself

If you’re at CMJ this year to hear a “band-of-the-moment,” you will probably put it upon yourself to catch San Diego’s The Muslims, which you should, because they basically sound like Johnathan Richman’s offspring if they’d hitchhiked across the country to catch girls in Mission Beach instead of Harvard Square. Think of the most apathetically awesome sounding band since the Strokes formed a decade ago and add their hometown’s retro-punk history (Rocket From The Crypt, The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower, etc.) and you’ve kind of got an idea of where these guys are coming from. We’ve got two songs from the group’s debut full-length up for download today, a tune about ridding yourself of nocturnal boredom (“Nightlife”) and being utterly speechless in the presence of a crush (“Beside Myself”). So if you're in New York, badge-less or not, you can catch the Muslims this week at one of the nine million shows they are playing, details below.
