When browsing the MySpace of Benji Hughes—the rotund Southern viking pictured above—and noting that his influences were, in this order, “girls, beers, the river, storms, and space,” I was seriously expecting some dripping cosmic Americana in the vein of those isolationist neo-hippies like Brightblack Morning Light or White Flight. Surprisingly, the Charlotte, NC native makes music that is anything but; instead paddling down that one-man-avant-pop-band river with his producer, LA studio veteren Keefus Ciancia, and a couple cases of Natty Bo, “Why Do These Parties Always End The Same Way?” sounds like Julian Casablancas’ Danger Mouse-produced solo single that will probably never exist—organically stitched-together accompaniment and a half-baked "beer coma" drawl. Take that, hippies.

Sounds like: Gnarls Barkley, Grampall Jookabox, Julian Casablancas
