Much of independent hip-hop often suffers from its own self-seriousness, losing street relevance and energy under patronizing and idealistic rhymes. What it usually lacks in lyrical pugnacity is often made up in head-spinning production, crackly obtuse beats made from absent chart aspirations and hours upon hours of crate digging. Florida group CYNE manage to balance the best of both, waxing cool and collected over some ace left-field accompaniment and not making it sound either preachy or academic. We’re stoked to offer up a full-album stream of the group’s new long-player Pretty Dark Things (out now through Hometapes), a solid front-to-back opus of wise-minded and musically adventurous hip-hop, stuff that’s rooted in vintage rhyme throwing but still isn’t afraid to sample some prickly guitars and make them sound like whale moans. We’re also offering an exclusive download of “The Runaway,” a sleeper hit on the album’s A-Side that sounds crowded and hurried at first until it finds itself under a wonky trumpet phrase.
