EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: A Brief Smile - Bigger Lies + Never Have The Time

A Brief Smile might have named themselves after a line in Elliot Smith’s “Speed Trials” but this band does not fuck with the whole mopey, self-indulgent folk tip. This is a band of five dudes that spends hours fussing over guitar and organ sounds in their studio, carefully designing their sonic architecture into something that sounds like Frank Gehry buildings falling into a black hole while J. Spaceman soundtracks the whole thing from a crescent moon with an acoustic guitar. They’re only in their early twenties, but these dudes have been at it for over four years, stretching the shrill sounds from their AC30s and Fender Twins to fill rooms both big and small, on left and right coasts, and in that time they’ve also managed to put out three EPs, a full-length album, and still keep a healthy stack of unreleased material on hold, from which we snagged “Bigger Lies”.

The song—available only to you here at RCRD LBL—centers around an overdriven, three-note Rhodes riff but really sounds like The Catherine Wheel on psychedelic cactus, all glassy guitars, disjointed pop choruses and voices in your head.  Grab it below alongside “Never Have The Time”, the single to the band’s first long-player, Now We All Have Horns. Buy that here and catch the slo-mo heavy clip for the song above.

Sounds like: Spiritualized, The Stills, Annuals
