DOWNLOAD: That Ghost - I Crossed Out The Options

Santa Rosa, CA is about fifty-five miles north of San Francisco off the 101 highway, the largest city in California’s wine country and home at times to ultimo artistes like the late Charles Shultz and Tom Waits. That Ghost is Ryan Schmale, an eighteen year old Santa Rosa resident who makes fuzzy pop music that sounds like Guided By Voices dealing with the pressures of high school (which, I guess, is kind of what it is). According to dude’s MySpace, he’s already chalked up five out of print releases since December of 2006, including three full-lengths and two EPs (holler prodigies), but just finally released his first proper seven-inch on Brooklyn startup Two Syllable last week. We’ve got the A-Side for download—“I Crossed Out The Options”, a swift three-chord pop song sticky with over-trebled guitars and Schmale doing his best Jonathan Richman by mumbling lines about calling and walking down halls and wasting time and stuff like that. This, however, will not waste your time, unless you consider sitting around drinking Dr. Pepper and eating goldfish while listening to records a waste of time, which would be pretty lame.

Sounds like: Guided By Voices, The Strokes, Deerhunter

Sounds like Colin Meloy

Sounds like Colin Meloy fronting the Strokes at their Guided By Voicesiest ripoffiest. Totally fucking sucks. Two syllable, this is strike one.

wow, criticism is easier

wow, criticism is easier than creation, no?

this kid is 18! ya, maybe he

this kid is 18! ya, maybe he hasn't quite found his voice yet, but still, excellent promise.... glad someone is putting his stuff out

Criticism is easier than

Criticism is easier than creation, yes, but I can, and do, "create" (read: make records) a much more subtle ripoff than this kid. But alas, this kid is cuter and more photogenic than me, so of course someone is going to put out his 7-inch. Look at a band like Akudama (www.myspace.com/akudama). They are "from Brooklyn" (I understand That Ghost is from northern California, but it's the principle) and "create" music too. Someone puts their records out. The irk-factor for me comes in at the point where the music is no better, in many cases far worse, than the masterpieces some other 18 year-old kid(s) with no people/networking skills are making at THEIR mom's house that will NEVER be heard. Indie rock used to really mean independence, adventurism and discovery. Listening to this reminds me that all indie rock is anymore is mass commercialism in support of a now image conscious and social status driven "movement."

i dont even listen to guided

i dont even listen to guided by voices or colin meloy haha. nice
