EXCLUSIVE WORLD PREMIERE DOWNLOAD: Mason Proper - Lock And Key

Northern Michigan is f'ing COLD. Mason Proper are from Northern Michigan, and recorded their new album Olly Oxen Free in an empty house in the area, piecing most everything together themselves with some additional production from Brooklyn knobsman Chris Coady (Grizzly Bear, TVOTR, Architecture In Helsinki). It's strange then, that the rather normal, indie-rock-loving dudes in the group have crafted an album that is like the farthest thing from Joy Division’s frigid buzz, a record that is balmy, polyrhythmic, and open. The first single "Lock And Key"—an arty soul joint that sounds like it was arranged by Tom Waits—shifts from barroom piano to mossy, wet patches of keyboards, sixties pop harmonies to spare, messy beats, and somehow managing to prevent any of its many parts from sounding superfluous. It's like the sound of playing flashlight tag in May and complaining about bedtime: "Take your lock and key and shove it."
This morning we have an exclusive, world premiere download of “Lock And Key”, preceding Olly’s release on September 23rd through Dovecote Records. Make sure to nab this taught jam and spend your Monday bouncing through corridors and daydreaming of times more juvenile.
Sounds like: Cold War Kids, Dr. Dog, Ra Ra Riot
