Part shoegaze and part surfer rock, with just a sprinkle of Mates of State, "Crystal Stilts" plays like the bizarro version of "Misirlou" (of Pulp Fiction fame). The new single from the Brooklyn-based band of the same name, has a heavier vibe and with the addition of muffled sounding lyrics blending into the instruments almost to the point of incoherency, it is the song for when the always-upbeat surfer inside us all is just not having a totally bodacious day.
While the October 28 release date of their debut full-length album, Alight of Night (on Slumberland), will miss out on being the soundtrack to our beach-bummed summer days, we look forward to hearing more of their post-punk, "avant-garage" sound. In the meantime, we're thanking Kahuna that we have something to enjoy on those low key days when the only surfing we have to look forward to is on the subways.
