Big Stereo's RCRD LBL

Welcome to the third edition of our new guest-blogging feature "[Insert Name Of Site We Love Here]'s RCRD LBL". Basically, we love to tip our hats to the folks posting great tracks day in and day out and chat with them about their sites and what makes them tick, or blog, as the case maybe be. Also included in every feature will be a hand picked list of their favorite artists and songs from both RCRD LBL and their own site. In the next few weeks, you can expect brilliance from Music for Robots.

Needless to say, we are very psyched on this and we hope you are too.

Setting the stage this week is a massive site aptly named Big Stereo.  In terms of writing, music, and general goodness, Big Stereo is a force to be reckoned with.  Their tastes and dedication are unparalleled, and we're more than a little bit excited to have had the chance to put this together.

Please tell us a bit more about your site. When you started it, what your editorial mission is, what you think makes it unique, etc, etc.

We started in April of 2005. I've always approached blogging as more of a curator rather than a journalist -- the blog is closer to an art gallery than a publication. There are like 50 billion blogs and everybody is doing something. It doesn't feel like we're doing anything unique anymore, which is ok.

How have you seen the music blog world change/shift over the past few years?

There's definitely a much larger marketing push than a couple years ago -- artists and labels see blogs as a great way to get their message out there for free. It's become a total struggle between what we want to post and what people want us to post.

What is your process for discovering music like? Or to put it another way, where do you find all the great stuff you post (without giving away too many secrets!)

I don't even know anymore. I feel like I'm constantly being hit from every side... which isn't necessarily a bad thing but sometimes recommendations are overwhelming. My favorite discoveries are always the ones I happen to randomly come across on mine own.

What are your future plans for the site?

We're continuing to build our events out and starting to think about building in an appropriate non-traditional record label.  We've definitely been paying close attention to RCRD LBL (and some others).  There is a very obvious shift from blog to label (or label to blog) that is totally natural and in tune with the current Internet landscape. I guess we just hope to help blur than line a little bit more.

Bo$$ in Drama - All The Love

I am so love with Bo$$ in Drama.  Along with Database, NRK and some others, he represents a new generation of party music from Brazil that is just so fun. "All The Love" is my song. I play it all the time.

The Presets - This Boy's In Love (Lifelike remix)

DUH!

Health - Triceratops (Acid Girls Before Dancefloorasaurases Ruled The Earth Mix)

HEALTH just came out with their f'ing amazing remix album. I think on the disc the title of this one is shortened to Acid Girls remix A which just doesn't have the same special ring. Both their remixes for this track are super good -- this is a perfect opener.

Little Boots - Stuck on Repeat

If Little Boots isn't the biggest artist ever this time next year than that means only one thing: the world has stopped spinning.

Hail Social - Heaven

I've posted Hail Social so many times that I've lost count. This band is just so super. Gosh, the Designer Drugs remix of "Heaven" is a floor filler, but I have lots of love for the original too. Hail Social is perfect late night post-disco driving music.

Big Stereo's Favorite Tracks

BMX - WAR

Jad writes for BIGSTEREO, and he's also in this band BMX. They've been described as a lo-fi Gameboy/Gamegirl which I think is pretty spot on... there's something very enduring about their songs: like stretching back to childhood and playing through endless summers and beaches and stuff.

Mono4 - Kindo Friend (Cello Zero remix)

Mono4 are my favorite band right now. And I think they should be huge. If I were to start a label this would be the first band I'd want to sign.

Le Corps Mince de Françoise - Cool & Bored

Le Corps Mince de Françoise are from Helsinki and kinda remind me of CSS. "Cool and Bored" isn't my favorite track by them but it's all I've gotten around to posting. Go hunt down "Pollution!" because it is next level stuff.

Sportsday Megaphone - Young Lust

Hugh Frost is Sportsday Megaphone and Sportsday Megaphone is Hugh Frost. Everything this guy does is quality. One of BIGSTEREO's all time favs.

Walter Meego - Girls

Waleter Meego is another BIGSTEREO fav -- annnnnd they are also one of my favorite live bands. Always quality.
