VIDEO THRWBCK: Lesley Gore - You Don't Own Me (Live) (1964)

Recently while taking a weekend stroll through the city, we came upon a vinyl vendor near the Cooper Union campus at Astor Place. We always stop by these dudes to see what they're carrying--you never know what awesome stuff you might find. Turns out this guy had a mint copy of Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows, Lesley Gore's greatest hits compilation from the '60s (he tried to sell us a Donovan record as a deal, and no offense to Donovan, but we weren't that into it). Anyway, the record is really, really good, obviously: all of those '60s teen starlets are worth their weight in cheesy gold. The album has "You Don't Own Me", on which Lesley sings with an almost palpable passion, and lyric-wise is pretty prescient, since Lesley is now openly gay and in her early '60s. We love her, so we thought we'd share this live performance of "You Don't Own Me" from a 1960s variety show.
