VIDEO THRWBCK: The Libertines - What A Waster (Live at CBGB's 2003)
I remember buying the Libertines' first single—the double A side "What A Waster" b/w "I Get Along"—in November of 2002 at a small shop in the West Village called Rebel Rebel. At the time, the shop mostly sold old (’80s) indie pop and dance records geared toward the neighborhood's gay community's record buying tastes, but for some reason managed to get every brand new, hot UK rock single way before anyone else. They also sold vintage copies of The Face and NME. Anyways, this song is pretty much the best intro to a band you could hope for and it made me a fan of the Libs from day one. It crackles and swerves, makes abundant use of obscure British slang (what's a div?) and was a highlight of every show of theirs that I went to. Check out this pretty rare live version from CBGB's; I was there—true story.
