Mochipet (a.k.a. Taiwan-born David Wang) makes ‘80s-inspired techno rap that sounds like Grandmaster Flash hanging out in Berlin with Miss Kittin circa 2003. If that’s hard to picture, just listen to today’s download “Sharp Drest”--its beats are hard and dirty, but the rapping is very cadenced and laid-back, like those late-70s/early ‘80s Bronx dudes. And if it’s of any indication of Mochipet’s techno cred, he’s released records on both Ellen Allien’s legendary Bpitchcontrol label and Oakland-based electro imprint Tigerbeat6. As far as “Sharp Drest” goes, here’s all you really need to know: it includes the line “I’m drinking vino sparklin’/And singing dirty raps up in my clean apartment” being sung by none other than Eric Steuer from RCRD LBL band Meanest Man Contest. How can that not make your day?
Sounds like: Meanest Man Contest, Miss Kittin, Grandmaster Flash
