It’s rare in today’s day of spellcheck and wikipedia to find an artist with the wordsmith talent and romantic panache of a young Shakespeare. But Chris Bathgate carves ethereal melodies and lyrics that make goose-bumps rise and thoughts sink deep into pools of introspection. He laments in "Serpentine", “one brash phrase could crush this fragile daze- my thoughts swirl in some shrill sad cannonade- and one such spur that caused my throut to creak- the one dull dawn that I've sentenced to repeat." As his seeping alto voice ebbs and flows with piano, time-poetry-and-the silence in between- flows easy. Forget comparisons to Will Oldham and Jeff Tweedy. Even if you ain't the romantic type, you may find yourself falling for this.
