Monika Records from Berlin is sort of the female version Kompakt Records. In fact, where that label has very few female artists (last count: 0), Monika has almost exclusively female artists. And while Kompakt is owned by some certifiable music legends (Wolfgang Voigt to thread) so is Monika. Gudrun Gut is her name and finding choice female acts is her game. Gut was a one-time member of Einsturzende Neubauten and was in the glorious 80s art-rock trio Malaria!

Barbara Morgenstern is probably Monika's flagship artist. A gifted piano player and songwriter, Morgenstern was recently in the U.S. to open for the Mountian Goats and people were rocked by her charm, her wit and a stage presence so infectious she should be quarantined. "Aus Heiterem Himmel" is the lead song from her amazing third album Nicht Muss. The first half of the song is in German, the second half is in English.
