FEATURED: Dirty on Purpose blog up a storm

Our friend Daphne used to be in the electroclash girl band Avenue D (RIP!), and one day in early 2006, when YouTube.com had just arrived on the scene, we decided to do a search for Ave D’s most popular song, the, um, evocative “Do I Look Like A Slut?”. A few keystrokes and seconds later, YouTube spat out about 20 videos of random dolled-up teenage girls writhing around their bedrooms and mouthing along to the song’s durrty lyrics. Slightly appalled, yet eternally amused, our lives were changed forever.
The four boys in Dirty on Purpose had a similar experience, but instead of 13-year-olds in braces and American Apparel undies, the people in the YouTube videos that feature DoP’s heart-on-their-sleeves indie pop songs are pensive, subdued, and posses a wonderful quality—the ability to reappropriate a band’s songs and turn them into something new, DIY-style. DoP picked out their favorite homemade tributes and posted them to their RCRD LBL blog.
In addition, it was announced over the weekend that DoP are playing with Band of Horses on Valentine’s Day at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Aw! You know this is going to sell out like crazy, so make sure to buy two tickets so you can bring that special someone (or at least a single friend to get wasted with and make fun of all the lovey-doveys).
