FEATURED: Ezra Furman and the Harpoons

The cool thing about industry festivals is that, between trying to catch the next-big-things at Mercury Lounge and the established super acts perform Hammerstein, you always stumble upon a diamond in the rough at some party or warehouse. At last year’s CMJ our big surprise was Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, who played the Fader Lounge to a fairly large audience one afternoon. Ezra is a tiny little dude who always wears plastic sunglasses 24/7 and writes beautiful country-tinged songs on his acoustic guitar about sitting alone on Valentine’s Day and God being a middle-aged woman who’s sacred to date a guy from her office. It’s brilliant and slightly heartbreaking. He signed to Chicago label Minty Fresh and released Banging Down the Doors last year. My Big Mouth Strikes Again are also big fans, and wrote a review of the album today.
