Like all things interesting nowadays, Jomi Massage is thoroughly Scandinavian (from Copenhagen, to be exact) and makes challenging yet enjoyable art rock. The pseudonym for Danish singer/composer Signe Hoirup Wille-Jorgensen (one that she came up with when she came across a vintage electric back massager, no less), Jomi Massage sounds like the astral experimental pop of spiritual sister Planningtorock, but with a little bit more warmth thrown in—like Young Marble Giants if they were from a stable economy. We were particularly pleased with “A Meeting”, a song that begins with a riff very similar to Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets” (seriously) and evolves into a grungey guitar breakdown halfway through. The two other songs (“Redwinelips” and “I See Those Who Died”) are sparse and beautiful.
