Soundtrack: The Wire "...and all the pieces matter"

Forget about Iowa caucuses, let's start of 2008 with some real news: our favorite TV show, The Wire, is back with its fifth and final season on HBO this Sunday, 6th January. And to celebrate, Nonesuch Records and YoYo in New York are hosting the official The Wire soundtrack album today (Friday, 4th January).
What's on the CD? All the bangers featured on the show over the past five years. Expect to hear from Paul Weller, ex-Spearhead frontman, Michael Franti, and cover versions of Tom Waits' "Way Down in the Hole", which is better known as The Wire's opening title song.
Nonesuch has taken the opportunity to release a second CD too which will feature unsigned rap talent from Baltimore and is accompanied by a booklet by Jeff Chang, the author of "Can't Stop Won't Stop". That's a great fit for the hip hop heavy TV show. And, to mark the occasion, rappers Verb, D.O.G., Mullyman and Dirty Hartz (who are featured on the second disc) have made the trip from B-More to perform at YoYo.
