Christian Martin's "Groundhog Day"

The relative silence of dirtybird can mean only one thing: they are impossibly busy.

All four main elements of the camp are involved in different projects soon to come, particularly the "Hyphy House" style they are protecting in their studio.

Most recently, they leaked the new single "Groundhog Day" from Christian Martin and Claude VonStroke. Rather than a digital tease, though, they dropped the 12" vinyl in only three locations: Juno (UK), Freebase (Frankfurt) and Tweekin (USA).

Only 500 are available as clear vinyl and each comes with an equally-limited remix from the hotly-tipped Chaim on the flip.

Your new single with Claude VonStroke, "Groundhog Day," is deceptively simple.

The melody began as a small loop in Reason. I brought a bunch of samples and melodies over to Barclay's studio, that happened to be the one that caught his ear. We began fleshing it out immediately, and it was completely done in about two days of studio work. Working with Barclay (aka VonStroke) is always a pleasure because he is able to listen to so many different sonic experiments without loosing sight of a track's overall groove.

How does staying independent give you an advantage?

With dirtybird, I'm able to experiment with many different musical styles, thanks to our club night and park party. And we all have a very low tolerance for sonic bullshit.

How to you view the state of U.S. dance music?

There are pockets of passionate dance music fans all over the US, but the scene is still driven by people obsessed with electronic music, rather than mass media. In Europe, dance music is much more of an integrated way of life.

"Hyphy House," what's that?

Hyphy house focuses on elements that house music shares with bay area hip-hop: booming 808 bass, old school snaps & claps, and simplicity. Tracks like The Pack's "Vans" and E-40's "Tell Me When to Go" are great examples. Their beats are extremely sparse, yet impossible not to nod your head to. Like 'Stoopit' and our remix of 'Tricky Disco.'
