DOWNLOAD: Nick T. (of Islands) - Broken Crow (Reaching Quiet cover)
When the Unicorns burst out on the scene in the early '00s, they ushered in a new era of quirky North American indie pop that has been often imitated but not yet duplicated. When they broke up in 2004 (after their trailblazing record Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?) front man Nick Thorburn went on to form the Montreal-based Islands, whose critically acclaimed LP Return to the Sea was a logical continuation of the Unicorns' pop rock.
Nick has just recorded a cover of "Broken Crow", a song by indie rap crew Reaching Quiet (themselves an offshoot of Oakland, CA indie rockers WHY?). Nick transforms the song from an electro-driven rhyme-off to a powerful, Tom Waits-style ballad, which is pretty inspiring in itself. Here's the link, enjoy!
